In order to determine the most viable option for the long-term management of your child’s myopia, we perform thorough testing using special equipment to establish a comprehensive baseline for the treatment. An overview of the current available options, their safety and efficacy profiles, their applicability to your child’s scenario, as well as the time and financial investment required is provided to help you make an well informed decision.
Overnight OrthoK is one of the most effective options to slow eye elongation. The treatment utilizes custom designed contact lenses (OrthoK lenses) made from rigid gas permeable materials to reshape the cornea and provide clear unaided vision during daytime. Due to its unique advantage of complete freedom from any correction during daytime, flexibility of allowing parents to be in charge of lens application, removal, and care; OrthoK is a very popular choice in younger myopes with active lifestyle and strong motivation to be spectacle free.
MFCLs offer similar efficacy of myopia control as OrthoK, but instead are worn during daytime. MFCLs are available as daily disposable or monthly replacement options, hence are easier to clean and maintain, with minimal impact on corneal shape, and offer easier transition or combination with glasses hence greater flexibility when traveling or camping. As a result, it is a great choice for children who have strong motivation to be spectacle-free and the ability to handle the application and removal of the lenses independently.
Atropine eye drop of diluted concentrations, another widely prescribed treatment for myopia control, offers good convenience and tolerability. It can be used as a standalone treatment for children who prefer to wear glasses or as an adjunct therapy to overnight OrthoK or daytime MFCL.
Glasses specially designed for slowing myopia are currently undergoing phase III clinical trials in the US hence not available for commercial use yet. Manufacturer-sponsored studies have shown highly promising controlling efficacy. We are eager go share with you the clinical performance of the treatment used outside of US and will inform you as soon as this technology is approved.
Other specially designed glasses and contact lenses are also commonly prescribed for children with more complicated presentations. We have ample experience working with highly complex cases and will help you find the most appropriate option that balances the quality of vision, safety of long-term use, and efficacy for myopia control.
Meet Dr. Liu
Originally from Beijing, I graduated from Peking University and practiced as an ophthalmologist in China before relocating to the United States.
The emphasis of my research and clinical expertise has been on the investigation and utilization of novel optical designs and pharmaceuticals in myopia control, and I enjoy a global reputation in the field.
I obtained 4 graduate degrees in addition to my medical training in China: MBA in financial management; accelerated OD at Pacific University, College of Optometry; MPH (emphasis in biostatistics and clinical study design) and a PhD in physiological optics at UC Berkeley.
I enjoy teaching both in didactic and clinical settings. I have years of experience in teaching basic and clinical pharmacology, specialty contact lenses, ocular disease, and evidence-based optometry.
When not at work, I love cooking spicy food, swimming, doing HIIT, and spending time with my family, including my two Corgis Q and Pi.
Meet Dr. Jung
I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, which is an island with rocky beaches, green forests, and rainy winters. I spent a lot of time outside as a child, and I think that is part of the reason why I’m not nearsighted!
I work with residents and student clinicians to provide myopia and specialty contact lens services to patients. Additionally, I enjoy delivering CE lectures and workshops on all aspects of myopia management.
I completed my Doctor of Optometry at Pacific University in Oregon, then continued my journey south to UC Berkeley for residency training in Primary Care and Contact Lenses. During my residency, I gained extensive experience in managing complex ocular diseases and challenging pediatric myopia cases. In addition to my roles in clinical teaching and patient care, I am deeply involved in clinical myopia research, focusing on the safety and efficacy of innovative myopia interventions.
I love long-distance running around the Bay Area, cooking, and playing board games. I am also creative, and love to do crafts and DIY projects, including watercolor, pottery, sewing and more. If you, or your child, does crafts I’d love to see them!
